about

Limited edition Flash-drive + Digital album. This release is a subjective reflection on the place of Hrklávka by the Rusava river in Czech Republic. During the span of one year, soundscapes were captured in order to make a sonic portrait of the landscape. The author grew up and spent his childhood in the recorded places which his father had shown to him one day, and he returned there to present those early memories and confront them with the contemporary soundscape. The album is accompanied by a notebook with notes that were made in the field during the recordings and describe the author’s recording techniques.

„You have got two ears to be able to hear the meeting as well as the permanent. Do not listen using only an ear, this way you would not listen perfectly.“
Pai Čang

Seven field recordings made by Tomáš Šenkyřík´s ear and hand – the sound portrait of the landscape where he spent part of his childhood; that was the only thing he told me about it – has started reminding me more and more Chinese landscape painting made by Indian ink or haiku. In my point of view Tomáš´s recordings have the same magical power that combines the moment of limitation and immersion. Through the single move of an eye, arm, hand and brush the masterful sketching of a brush soaked with water and Indian ink has the ability to express the landscape in her unity, but the print of brush on the paper hides in itself the remote skyline and the light white fog descending to the valley. Tomáš as well as the Chinese master knows how to use the technique of concentration, moderation, gift of listening, enchantment and humbleness. The Rusava landscape is not only described and illustrated. It is nor narrated, “mediated” by the cadence of the bird singing at the dusk or water gurgling in the brook at dawn. The sound of burbling water or of the bird singing ARE the real though ONLY “sound” landscape. This landscape seems to be as precious as the beauty, geology and morphology of the physical one where the recording was in the specific and one-and-only moment made.

I can speculate whether the “Hrklávka” landscape is really free from the sound of passing cars, motorcycles, planes and crying children. Whether the author has removed the human sounds to put it symbolically back to the mythical and mystical time of childhood. While listening I can be thinking whether this and last dry spring, summer and autumn has changed not only the colors of grass, leaves but the acoustics of the meadows, hillsides, tops and the bottoms of hills as well? Can the lack of the water running down in the riverbeds change the landscape, does it have ability to draw further its sensory presence as well as the timbre and to harm its soul by the humidity. While listening I can be thinking that it is not possible to hold the sound landscape as well as the physical landscape which we can perceive via sense of sight, sense of hearing and olfactory sense. And that the landscape that is being heard well and softly can bring out the other sense. Alternatively I do not have to think about anything at all and I can just listen whether he (Šenkyřík) managed like the poet Bašó to capture the whole river from the spring to the mouth in a few words.

Hlasy zurčící vody i zpěvných ptáků JSOU tou skutečnou, i když JEN „zvukovou“ krajinou.

Jestli ji autor příměsi lidského hluku zbavil, aby ji symbolicky vrátil do mýtického a mystického času dětství. Při poslouchání mohu přemýšlet i nad tím, zda letošní a loňské suché jaro, léto a podzim změnily vedle barev trávy a listí, akustiku luk, strání, temen a úpatí kopců?
